Turn one dial

White is bright and airy. Brown is low and deep. Every colour between is one turn away, and the dial always says it in words.

  1. Violet

    +6 dB per octave

The brightest colour, mostly high hiss.

  2. Blue

    +3 dB per octave

Brighter than white, for people who like hiss.

  3. White

flat: equal power at every frequency

A bright, even hiss, like a detuned radio.

  4. Grey

    shaped to an equal-loudness curve

Tuned to sound equally loud at every pitch to the human ear.

  5. Pink

    −3 dB per octave

Softer than white, like steady rain.

  6. Brown

    −6 dB per octave

Deep and low, like a waterfall or a strong wind. Also called red noise.

  7. Deep brown

    brown with a low shelf

Brown noise with more rumble at the bottom.

Each drawing is the colour’s spectrum: low pitches on the left, high on the right. Every sound

It listens. It never records.

Two ways to let Hush Machine pick the sound for you. Both listen for 10 seconds, measure, and forget.

Plus

Play any sound near your phone, a fan or a video on a laptop. Hush Machine listens for 10 seconds and rebuilds it with its own generators.

Nothing is recorded or kept, only measured.

Room match

Before sleep it listens to the room for 10 seconds and sets the colour and level to cover what's there: traffic goes browner, voices pinker.

  • TrafficBrowner
  • VoicesPinker

Nothing is recorded or kept.

The night journey

The colour drifts while you sleep: pink to fall asleep, deep brown through the night, brightening towards white at wake time. Or set the sleep timer and let it go with a long, slow fade.

Questions

What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
White noise has equal power at every frequency, so it sounds like a bright hiss. Pink noise drops by 3 dB per octave and sounds softer, like steady rain. Brown noise drops by 6 dB per octave and sounds deep, like a waterfall or a strong wind.
Is the noise a recording?
No. The app makes the noise on the iPhone as it plays, from a generator that never repeats, so there is no loop point to hear.
What is deep brown noise?
Brown noise with extra low end: the low rumble many people ask for when brown noise still sounds too bright.
Does the app need an account?
No. The app has no account, no ads and no analytics.
